COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Dunkerly Puts Canyons Home Free, 69-65

Melissa Dunkerly scored 29 points and College of the Canyons held off Hancock, 69-65, Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the Southern California regional at Canyons.

The Cougars (30-5) led by 17 points with 12 minutes to play, but the Bulldogs (20-8) drew to within 67-65 on a jump shot by Anna Williams with 10 seconds remaining.

Dunkerly’s free throws secured the Cougars’ 15th consecutive victory.

Kyetra Brown added 11 points and 14 assists for the Cougars, who earned a berth in the state final four at Orange Coast College Thursday.

The Cougars won despite the absence of leading scorer Stephanie Labor, who averages 19 points but has missed several games with an ankle injury.

Williams scored 18 points for the Bulldogs, who trailed, 34-29, at halftime.

CS Sacramento 84, CS Northridge 55--After breaking their 27-game losing streak Wednesday night against Division II Cal State Los Angeles, the Matadors (1-23, 0-6) returned to form in an American West Conference setback at Northridge.

Center Maureen Batiste had with 11 points and nine rebounds for Northridge. Carrie Dormire was held to five points, hitting only one of six three-point shots.

Sacramento (6-20, 3-3) made 30 of 37 free throws (81.1%) as Northridge was whistled for 31 fouls to 21 by the Hornets.

Northridge committed 34 turnovers to Sacramento’s 24.

Sacramento’s Shelby Boudreaux had 16 points and eight rebounds.

BASEBALL

CS San Bernardino 6, The Master’s 4--Matt Henzie had a double, triple, two runs batted in and scored two runs for the Mustangs in a nonconference setback at CS San Bernardino.

Matt Huter had two hits, including a triple, for the Mustangs (8-4).

Cerritos 3, Canyons 1--The Cougars had the bases loaded with none out in the ninth inning but failed to score in a nonconference game at Canyons.

Justin Bunch hit into a double play and Brian Shaw grounded out with men on second and third.

Chris Tashima singled to score Shane Petrelli earlier in the inning.

Bobby Cowan pitched 7 1/3 innings for Canyons (4-10).

Pierce 11, San Diego City 3--Jeff Astgen went four for four with a two-run triple in the sixth inning that broke open a 5-3 nonconference game at San Diego.

Astgen also scored three runs for the Brahmas (4-10).

Pasadena 8, Oxnard 2--Jake Spahr, Matt Anderson, Chuck Harrington and Adam Basua each had two hits for Oxnard (10-4). Spahr tripled and drove in a run.

Cal Lutheran 4-11, Redlands 3-12--Travis DeVore’s two-run single with one out in the 11th was the difference for the Bulldogs in the second game of a SCIAC doubleheader at Redlands.

Jeff Marks was three for seven with three RBIs and homered in the second game for Cal Lutheran.

Bulldog pitcher Scott Sasser went the distance but lost the opener as Cal Lutheran scored three unearned runs. Jesus Melgoza pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for his second save.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 5-5, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 2-4--Heather Corey, Bekkah Snider and Heidi Stevens each had run-scoring singles for the Regals in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie in the first game of an SCIAC doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

In the second game, Xochitl Castillo had a three-run double in the first inning and Cal Lutheran (8-4, 6-0) held off the Athenas (5-7, 4-2) to complete their sweep.

Cal State Northridge 2, California 1--Kathy Blake-Small allowed four hits in nine innings for the Matadors (8-5) in a first-round game of the San Jose State tournament.

Lee Ann Taylor doubled while Jennifer Parker and Kelly Toovey each had two hits for the Matadors, who were held scoreless until the eighth inning.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Cal Lutheran 5, Occidental 4--The Regals (4-2, 2-0) took a 3-0 lead, fell behind the Tigers, 4-3, then pulled out an SCIAC victory at Thousand Oaks when Cammy Idler won her singles match, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Randi Christiansen tied the match moments earlier with a 6-2, 6-4 singles victory.
