WEEKEND TV : ‘Promised’: Blacks Migrate

The five-hour documentary “The Promised Land,” narrated by Morgan Freeman, traces the northern migration of African Americans from 1940 to 1970 Sunday at 9 p.m. on cable’s Discovery Channel.
Inspired by Nicholas Lemann’s book of the same name, the series chronicles the stories of impoverished African Americans who sought work in the industrial North. The series continues Monday through Wednesday.
