GIRLS’ ROUNDUP : Gerardo’s Two Goals Fuel Simi Valley’s Victory

Monica Gerardo scored her 18th and 19th goals on penalty kicks Wednesday to ignite Simi Valley High’s 2-1 victory over Westlake in a Marmonte League match.
Gerardo needs six goals to tie the school record for goals in a season set by Amy Hunter in 1991.
Simi Valley, ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Division I behind Marina, improved to 15-3-2, 5-1 in league play.

El Camino Real 4, Monroe 1--Claudia Nino, Courteny Henderson, Erin Karsh and Sara Simon scored in a nonleague match and helped the Conquistadors (4-0-1) remain undefeated.

La Reina 3, St. Bonaventure 1--Jennifer Baltruzak, Alica Bueschen and Tina Onsgard each scored for La Reina (9-2-1, 1-0) in a Tri-Valley League match at Thousand Oaks.

Oak Park 5, Fillmore 0--Kim Horn’s third goal of the season off a corner kick by Sheryl Klein was all the scoring the Eagles (4-6-1, 1-0) needed to beat the Flashes (4-3, 0-1) in a Tri-Valley League match at Fillmore.
BASKETBALL
Kennedy 64, Birmingham 36--Tami Ross, Tamaya Morris and Coyles Scarbrough combined for 43 points for the Golden Cougars (11-5, 2-0) in an easy victory over Birmingham (3-7, 0-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy.
Ross, a senior forward, scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for Kennedy, which outscored the Braves, 20-3, in the third quarter to take a 53-26 lead.

Monroe 57, Grant 48--Playing their third of four games on consecutive days, the Vikings got 18 points from Anna Marquez in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.
Monroe (9-3, 3-0) has won three games in row.
Sisters Shirley and Lindsey Sotero-Higa combined for 22 points and 11 assists. Shirley had 12 points and six assists, Lindsey 10 and five.
Grant fell to 7-7, 1-1.

Taft 68, San Fernando 13--Forward Vanessa Dunn had 28 points and 17 rebounds for Taft (10-1, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory over San Fernando.
Taft led, 43-4, at halftime and shut out San Fernando in the third quarter.
Taft’s Crystal Griffin added 12 points and junior guard Nyoki McKeith contributed 11 points, nine steals and seven assists.

El Camino Real 67, Chatsworth 62--Guard Tami Jones scored 26 points for the Conquistadores (6-5, 2-0) in a Northwest Conference game at El Camino Real.

Van Nuys 69, Canoga Park 49--Freshman center Lynne Berry had a season-high 25 points and 16 rebounds to help the Wolves improve to 4-7 in the Valley Pac-8 Conference game.
Brenda Everding added eight points and 11 rebounds.

Sylmar 50, Poly 40--Center Katosha Growin scored 19 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for the Spartans (6-1, 2-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Sylmar.

Hart 53, Saugus 35--Senior point guard LaCresha Clark scored 15 points for the Indians (13-5, 4-1) in a Foothill League game at Valencia High.
Wendy Downen added 11 points for the Indians.

Cornerstone Christian 57, Thatcher 21--Junior center Karen Breshears scored 16 points for Cornerstone Christian a Condor League game.
The Eagles (10-4, 3-0) outscored Thatcher, 18-2, in the third quarter.

Montclair Prep 40, Stephen S. Wise 7--The Mounties (7-4, 3-0) outscored Wise, 8-0, in the first quarter and didn’t look back in a Westside League game at Montclair Prep.
Amanda Kelson led the Mounties with 12 points.
Four players combined for seven points for Wise (6-8, 3-1).
