Algeria ‘Totally’ Rejects Opposition’s Peace Plan

TUNIS, Tunisia — Algeria’s government Wednesday rejected “totally and in detail” an opposition plan to end three years of civil war, a deal to which outlawed Muslim fundamentalists had given conditional support.
In Algiers, spokesman Ahmed Attaf of the army-backed government told a news conference in the Foreign Ministry:
“Algeria rejects totally and in (every) detail (this) hotchpotch mixture of ideas. The debate and conclusions which came from (a weekend meeting in Rome) remain a non-event for Algeria.”
Attaf’s statement was the first official reaction to the plan drawn up by Algeria’s opposition politicians.
The eight opposition groups had called for negotiations to lead to a transitional government to take the country to democratic elections.
