ROME — Prime Minister Lamberto Dini appealed for support for his day-old government Wednesday, while his predecessor, media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi, threatened to topple the nascent regime unless a general election is called in June.
Dini said he hoped to carry out his limited program in a “few months,” but he gave no election date.
Berlusconi and his conservative allies said they will not back Dini unless he promises to hold elections on June 11, arguing that Dini’s largely nonpartisan government violates the will of voters.
