Laguna Niguel : Donated Park Named for Holocaust Survivor
- Share via
A new park donated to the city by housing development company Shapell Industries will be named for Lilly Shapell, a Holocaust survivor who aided other refugees.
The City Council voted unanimously this week to name the .85-acre park overlooking Aliso and Wood Canyons Regional Park after the wife of Nathan Shapell, the owner of Shapell Industries. She died late last year.
According to the city’s park-naming policy, public parks can be named after places, historical events, mythological figures or people.
Mayor Mark Goodman said he also hopes residents will gather money to place a commemorative plaque in the small park. The park will be north of Highlands Avenue and west of Alicia Parkway in an area still being developed by Shapell Industries.
