REGION : Work to Start Soon on 605 Car Pool Lane

Work is scheduled to start in February on a new car pool lane along a seven-mile stretch of the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway, Caltrans officials said.
The $15.4-million project--to be completed in August, 1997--will add one lane in each direction between Telegraph Road in Santa Fe Springs and South Street in Cerritos.
Workers will re-stripe and rebuild the freeway’s median and emergency lane to make room for the car pool lane, said Russell Snyder, spokesman for the California Department of Transportation.
Existing lanes will remain open during daylight and peak commuting hours once construction is under way, Snyder said. In some cases, lanes may be closed during off-hours, such as midnight to 4 a.m.
About 208,000 vehicles travel the 605 Freeway each day, making it the ninth-busiest of the county’s 12 freeways, Snyder said.
