Oregon Coach Rich Brooks hopes the Ducks are as successful Monday against Penn State in the Rose Bowl game as they were the last time they visited Southern California, when they upset USC, 22-7, at the Coliseum.

Brooks said that was the turning point for the Ducks, who were 2-2 before that game. They finished with victories in six of their next seven games, losing only to Washington State, 21-7.

“That solidified this team’s belief in itself,†he said of the victory over the Trojans. “Tony Graziani had to step in at quarterback because Danny (O’Neil) was injured, and that proved to ourselves that we had the players who could come through off the bench when we needed them.

“But, just as important, our offensive line came of age in that game. You don’t win championships without an offensive line.â€

The only head coaches in Division I-A who have been at their universities longer than Brooks are Penn State’s Paterno, Brigham Young’s LaVell Edwards, Nebraska’s Tom Osborne, Florida State’s Bobby Bowden and UCLA’s Terry Donahue. At 91-108-4 in 18 seasons, Brooks is the only one with a losing record.

Paterno is attempting to win his third national championship. In 29 seasons at Penn State, his record is 268-69-3.
