Nasdaq’s Trading Volume Surpasses NYSE’s in 1994: Posting its own historical high, the Nasdaq stock market in 1994 surpassed volume on the New York Stock Exchange for the first time, marking an important milestone on Wall Street. Trading volume was 74.35 billion shares on Nasdaq, 1.3% greater than the 73.42 billion in volume on the NYSE in 1994. American Stock Exchange volume totaled 4.52 billion shares. Nasdaq, a global electronic trading network that links buyers and sellers via computer, has picked away at NYSE’s dominance over the last several years.
