Items gleaned from student newspapers:

* A poetry club, fashioned after the Dead Poets Society, has sprung up at Brea-Olinda High School. Members share poetry ranging from classic literature to free verse as well as their own creations. A group poem is also part of the experience, with each member writing one line on a chosen topic.

* German classes, a victim of declining interest and tight budgets, will become a thing of the past next fall at Irvine High School. Students who want to continue to study German will have to go to University High, the only school left in the district with a German curriculum.

* A new tardiness policy is making a difference at Loara High School in Anaheim. If you’re not on time, you might be locked out of the classroom. Periodic lockouts are called by administrators, who advise teachers to lock their doors after the bell rings.

The first lockout resulted in about 40 students receiving detentions. After several more lockouts, the number of student violators dropped to about eight.
