MISSION VIEJO — Saddleback Coach Bill Brummel gained the 250th victory of his career when the Gauchos beat Grossmont, 75-58, in a nonconference men’s basketball game Wednesday at Saddleback.
Brummel, in his 14th season, has a record of 250-157 and led the Gauchos to the Orange Empire Conference title (his third) in 1993 and a second-place finish last season. His 1987 team reached the final of the State tournament only to fall to Ventura.
Micah Kroger scored 18 points and Anthony Carter added 12 for the Gauchos (10-3). Each had five rebounds.
Frank Allen added 10 points and five assists. But the strongest performance came from Keith Gwyn, a freshman from Dallas. He had 11 points and 13 rebounds, starting in place of sophomore Eric Ambrozich, who sat out because of a sore leg.
Even without Ambrozich, who is 6 feet 7, Saddleback outrebounded Grossmont, 51-37. Grossmont (6-8) was led by Damion Willis who had 19 points.
Lloyd Lake added 13 points, including nine of 10 free throws, for the Griffins.
