Instead of getting angry or embarrassed over not starting for No. 7 Kansas against Santa Clara on Tuesday night, Greg Ostertag got it right.
“I deserved what I got,” he said after keying the Jayhawks’ 80-75 victory at Lawrence, Kan. “I played like . . . . Saturday at Indiana and I didn’t deserve to start.”
Ostertag, a 7-foot-2 center, and Sean Pearson, who played poorly in the 19-point loss at Indiana, were on the bench when Coach Roy Williams started a lineup that was all freshmen and sophomores.
Ostertag, who sat out the first five minutes, made a momentum-shifting turnaround jump shot at the two-minute mark and wound up with 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
“I’d say I made about an 80% improvement,” he said.
Santa Clara (6-2) cut the lead of Kansas (6-1) to 78-75, but Jerod Haase made two free throws in the closing seconds.
No. 15 Arizona St. 98, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo 43--Ron Riley scored 24 points for the Sun Devils (6-2), whose margin of victory over the Mustangs (0-7) was their largest in 32 years.
No. 17 Michigan St. 79, Tennessee 68--Shawn Respert scored 25 points and Quinton Brooks added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans (5-1), which dealt the Volunteers (3-2) their 15th loss in a row on the road.
No. 19 Wake Forest 81, The Citadel 58--Tim Duncan scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against the Citadel (3-4) at Winston-Salem, N.C., to help the Demon Deacons (6-1).
Wake Forest’s leading scorer for the season, Randolph Childress, had to be helped from the floor with seven minutes to play because of a bruised hip.
No. 21 New Mexico St. 102, Texas-Arlington 63--Johnny Selvie scored a career-high 19 points at Las Cruces, where the Aggies (8-2) defeated the Mavericks (3-5) to make Neil McCarthy the school’s all-time victory leader with 401.
Selvie made all eight of his shots from the field.
