Imagine Vitale After a Pot of Coffee : Prep football: Texas announcers get national attention after they throw out objectivity and get a little too excited during playoff game.
DALLAS — The football game was phenomenal--34 points were scored in the final 2 1/2 minutes--and the TV announcers weren’t bad, either.
The delivery of last Saturday night’s John Tyler-Plano East high school playoff has brought national attention to mailman-anchor Denny Garver, his co-host, Eddy Clinton, and their guest for the evening, Lake Highlands High Coach Mike Zaffuto.
“The game got out of hand, and we got out of hand even more,†Garver said.
Sound bites from the play-by-play for Plano Telecable have been rebroadcast from New York to Los Angeles.
Plano East scored 27 points in the final 2 minutes 33 seconds to take the lead with 24 seconds remaining, then lost when its final kickoff was returned for the winning touchdown.
“They got it again! They got it again! . . . This is unbelievable. . . . Good gosh a’mighty Joe Friday,†Garver said after Plano East had recovered an onside kickoff after scoring. “Somebody give me something. I’m gonna die.â€
Garver after Plano East had scored again, taking the lead at 44-41: “Everybody on their cars in the radio back to Plano, you’ve done missed the greatest comeback of all times! Of all times!â€
Zaffuto, however, had the big call.
“Oh no! Oh no! Oh no! Oh my gosh, no! Come on! No! No! Gosh!†he said as the 97-yard kickoff return unfolded. “God bless those kids. I am sick. I want to throw up.â€
