OUTLOOK
Oh, what might have been. The Tritons were set. They had size, experience and ability. Then . . . D.J. Reynolds (6-8) is out for the season with a knee injury . . . Jan Tatala (6-5) is out for the season with a shoulder injury . . . Joey Harrison (6-5) is out for the season with a fractured vertebra. They were all to be starters. And it gets worse. Engle, MVP of the JV team, is out three weeks with a broken arm. Anderson, a part-time starter last season, is out three weeks with a foot injury. It might have been the Tritons’ best season since 1978, now there’s too many questions and too few answers. What’s left is Castaneda, who is a returning starter, but averaged 3.3 points. He’ll need to improve his scoring output. Johnson is being asked to take on an awful lot for a freshman. Perry saw limited playing time a year ago, but is an excellent shooter. Gardner is big, but thin, and did not play last year. Under normal circumstances, he would be a project, but he’ll probably be the Tritons’ center because of the injuries. A .500 season would be cause for celebration, and that’s possible if Engle and Anderson get back in time.
