WORLD IN BRIEF : BRAZIL : Indian Chief Is Acquitted of Rape

A Brazilian Indian chief who gained international fame for campaigning to save native lands has been acquitted of raping a teen-ager. The judge dismissed charges against Kaiapo chief Paulo Paiakan, 42, and his wife, Irekran, 36. The couple was accused of attacking 18-year-old Silvia Leticia Ferreira in May, 1992. Ferreira claimed that “to put down white people,†Paiakan raped her while his wife pinned her arms. The judge said there was not enough evidence to convict Paiakan.
