OUTLOOK
There might not be a team in the county that’s as quick or has as many talented guards as the Monarchs. Peterson, a returning all-county player who possesses all the tools necessary to advance to the next level, must maintain a level head and play within the team structure. Gondringer, a transfer from La Quinta, drives well to the basket, and Luckey is also extremely talented. The guard talent will allow Mater Dei to take more chances on defense. But their Achilles’ heel is size--the Monarchs lack a true center--the only player as tall as 6-1 is DeCinces. Mater Dei should be playoff ready by getting some tough midseason competition; the Monarchs have scheduled games against Ventura Buena, which beat them in the Division I-A championship last year; two defending State champions, Brea-Olinda and Mission Hills Alemany, and Division II-A semifinalist Ocean View.
