Driver Arrested in Fatal Accident
MISSION HILLS — A 23-year-old Sylmar man was arrested Sunday after the car he was driving spun out of control and smashed into a light pole and brick wall, killing an 18-year-old passenger, authorities said.
Fabian Perez of Sylmar died at the scene of the 2 a.m. accident. He was a passenger in the back seat of a Chevrolet Camaro headed south on Woodman Avenue near San Jose Street, said Los Angeles Police Officer Connie Fisher.
Witnesses told police that the car, driven by Tony Maraz, 23, of Sylmar, crossed into oncoming lanes, then ran off the road and hit a light pole and block wall, Fisher said.
Maraz and another passenger, Gilbert Diaz, 18, of San Fernando received minor injuries, she said.
Maraz was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail, Fisher said.
She said police believe Maraz was driving under the influence of alcohol.
