The Irvine and Edison girls’ cross-country teams, ranked No. 1 and 3 in the final Orange County Sportswriters’ poll, begin their quests for back-to-back State championships at the Southern Section preliminaries Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
Competition begins at 7:30 a.m., with a Division I girls’ race finishing the day at 3:42 p.m.
The top three teams from each race, of which there are 32 Saturday, and the top two individual runners not on one of the top three teams, advance to the Southern Section finals, Nov. 19 at Mt. San Antonio College.
Edison remains the favorite in Division II, but should receive stiff competition from Trabuco Hills (No. 4), the South Coast League champion, and Aliso Niguel (No. 8).
The most competitive boys’ race of the day figures to be in Division III at 8 a.m., when El Modena (No. 7), La Habra (No. 8), Santa Margarita and Brea-Olinda meet.
