COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine’s Tardif an Upset Winner in Tennis Tournament
Unseeded UC Irvine sophomore Marc-Andre Tardif upset second-seeded Jan Anderson of Arizona, 7-6, 7-6, in a singles quarterfinal at the Rolex Intercollegiate Tennis Assn. regional tournament Friday at UCI.
Anderson is ranked sixth in the nation.
USC’s Brett Hansen, a graduate of Newport Harbor and former Anteater, beat Loren Peters of UCLA, 6-3, 6-2, in another quarterfinal.
In nonconference water polo:
UC Irvine 9, Air Force 8--Peter Muller and Ryan Bailey each scored three goals to help Irvine (7-11) hang on for the victory at Heritage Park. Trevor Davis made a two-point shot with eight seconds left for Air Force (11-9).
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
Pacific 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Jennifer Lipski and Stephanie Cargill each had four kills and Melissa Blackler had 11 assists for Fullerton (0-24, 0-11) which lost, 15-3, 15-1, 15-4.
Cal State Northridge 3, UC Irvine 0--Missy Clements had 15 kills and Heather Anderson and Aimee Stone each added 10 kills to lead Cal State Northridge (14-7), 15-9, 15-6, 15-11. Popi Edwards had 14 kills and Stacy Mitchell added 13 for host UC Irvine (6-17).
In the National Christian College Athletic Assn. Division II men’s soccer tournament:
Pacific Christian 4, Clearwater (Fla.) 4 (Pacific Christian wins on penalty kicks, 5-4)--Ryan Bean had two goals and Andre Mehr and James Oates each scored one for Pacific Christian, which advanced to today’s title game against Moody Bible (Ill.).
In the NCCAA Division II women’s volleyball tournament:
PCC loses in semifinals--Baptist Bible (Mo.) defeated Pacific Christian in three games in Springfield, Mo. The defending champion Royals will play for third place today.
