The Talents in ‘Seagull’

I must take issue with Laurie Winer’s review of “The Seagull,†now playing at the Matrix Theatre, insofar as its treatment and, in the case of Robert Foxworth no treatment at all, of the actors (“Chekhov’s ‘Seagull’ Wings It Among Multiple Casts at Matrix,†Oct. 31). They seem to be characterized as “TV actors,†as if that were a species of performer not worthy of the boards.

I’m not sure I understand these categories, but I do know that this company embodies many of the best actors in and of American theater. I have worked with them on Broadway, in regional theaters and at my own theater, and I would be proud to have this company and their Chekhovian characters on my stage.

The Matrix is a labor of love that springs forth from a gifted group of actors. All’s fair in love and criticism, for sure, but a drop of respect for these actors might help keep this much-needed experience alive.
