Katella Boys, Girls Win Team Titles

BREA — The Katella boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams easily ran to Empire League titles Thursday at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.
Katella senior Jaime Vaicaro went out early and ran strong to finish in 17 minutes 35 seconds. Teammate Nancy Pinto was second (19:41).
Five Knight girls finished among the top eight, and Katella won with 19 points. Cypress finished second with 79 points, followed by El Dorado with 85. The top three teams advance to the Southern Section preliminaries.
In the boys’ race, Katella’s Edgar Benitez won in 15:54. Century’s Jimmy Patino finished second in 15:56, followed by Erick Miramontes (16:01) and Jorge Pinto (16:10), both of Katella.
Katella won with 22 points. Century edged Cypress, 60-65, for second.
