Antitrust Powers Expanded: President Clinton signed a bill this week permitting federal antitrust agencies to work with their foreign counterparts to protect American consumers and businesses from price fixing and other anti-competitive practices. The new law lets the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission enter into agreements with foreign agencies to exchange investigative information about companies and people in their jurisdictions. “Until now, U.S. antitrust enforcement agencies have often found vital evidence to be out of reach abroad,” Clinton said in a statement. He said the new law will lower prices for American consumers and help the United States enforce its antitrust laws against foreign and international firms participating in the U.S. market.
