Old Decree Against GE Lifted: The Justice Department tentatively agreed to a request by the company to end a 1911 court order requiring it to sell incandescent light bulbs only under the GE name. The department’s antitrust division cited technological advances and changes in antitrust law for its decision. However, it reserved the right to reverse its view after a 60-day period for public comment. The 83-year-old decree resolved a complaint charging that General Electric Co. tried to monopolize the incandescent lamp industry by secretly purchasing many of its competitors and fixing prices.
