Hughes and IBM Plan Joint Venture for Satellite Software Delivery: The aerospace company and the computer firm said they plan to use Hughes’ DirectTV satellite system to deliver computer programs directly to retail stores beginning sometime next year. Customers will be able to scan hundreds of programs via a touch screen and have their choices beamed to a local store by satellite, cutting down on inventory while expanding selection. The system could also be used to update software for corporate customers. But Hughes and IBM have not yet signed up any retailers or software vendors.
