Fishermen Want Government to Buy Their Boats: The plan could cost more than $100 million, but the fishermen, whose industry is on the verge of collapse, contend the government should help them because it promoted over-expansion of the fishing fleet in the 1970s and 1980s. The call for boat purchases comes after the New England Fishery Management Council, which oversees commercial fishing in the region, proposed harsh new restrictions including a ban on fishing off Georges Bank, once one of richest fisheries of the Atlantic Ocean.
