PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : McDaniel Got a Hot Tip From Ball

Terry McDaniel intercepted three passes in the Raiders’ victory over New England last Sunday, but on one of them he benefited from a tipped pass by defensive tackle Jerry Ball.

At 6 feet 1 and 310 pounds, Ball does not have the look of an explosive leaper. But his size is deceiving.

“Hey, I can get up,” said Ball, who with 14 tackles and two sacks has been a pleasant surprise for the Raiders after signing as a free agent from Cleveland. “I don’t dunk anymore because jumping like that is too hard on your knees. But I can still get up and lay it over a goal post and you know that’s (10 feet).”

Coach Art Shell agreed.

“Jerry has good athletic ability,” said Shell, who was one of the league’s top mobile big men in his 15-year playing career. “It’s all in the timing, which is something he is good at. Jerry’s a big man but can move.”

The Raiders are in good shape physically going into Sunday’s game at Miami. Safety Patrick Bates, wide receiver James Jett, cornerback Albert Lewis and defensive tackle Chester McGlockton are all listed as probable. . . . The Dolphins will start Bernie Parmalee at running back in place of Terry Kirby, who is out for the season with a knee injury. Recently signed former Ram Cleveland Gary might play, too. . . . Who said the Raiders don’t have a 1,000-yard rusher in their backfield? Quarterback Jeff Hostetler needs only 57 yards rushing to reach 1,000 yards in his career. . . . Punter Jeff Gossett still leads the NFL with a 46.2-yard average.
