CLAREMONT: John Roth, a Claremont McKenna College philosophy professor, has been appointed by President Clinton to serve on the U.S. council that oversees operation of the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.
Roth, a Claremont professor since 1966, has written several books about the Holocaust and served as a visiting professor of holocaust studies at the University of Haifa in Israel.
LA CANADA FLINTRIDGE: Local high school students will have the chance to help elementary school students by participating in Phone Friend, a Glendale Medical Adventist Center program for latchkey kids.
The center distributes a Phone Friend number to grade-school children so they have someone to talk to after school if their parents work late. La Canada Flintridge High students will answer calls, chat with the children and help with basic homework questions.
PASADENA: In a contest sponsored by the Hewlett-Packard Co. and Intel Foundation, Caltech is offering five awards to U.S. high school teachers who create effective curricula using the university’s Project Mathematics videotapes and workbooks. The teaching materials cover such topics as “The Story of Pi” and “The Theorem of Pythagoras.”
The winning teachers and their respective schools will each receive $1,000.
