DOWNEY — Justin Starkey scored two touchdowns to lead Western’s 31-20 victory over Downey Warren Friday night.
A 51-yard run by Starkey on the opening drive set up Western’s first score. David Bell caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Dean Chambers two plays later to give the Pioneers a 7-0 lead.
Western scored again on its next drive when Chambers, who completed his first six passes, found Starkey on a 13-yard screen pass.
Penalties both hurt and aided Warren on a drive late in the second quarter. After three penalties forced a first and 30 situation, two passes and a face-mask penalty against the Pioneers put Warren in scoring position.
The Bears (1-3) scored when lineman David Orloff recovered a fumble by teammate Darnell Robertson and ran the ball two yards for a touchdown.
Warren tied the score when quarterback Matt Sorensen scored on a 12-yard scramble.
The Pioneers (4-0) regained the lead on a 27-yard field goal by Bell.
A fumble late in the third quarter gave Western the ball on the Bears’ 30-yard line. Matt Frembling later scored on a one-yard dive.
The Pioneers put the game out of reach when Starkey scored on a 29-yard run to give Western a 31-14 lead.
Warren scored once more when Mike Hem caught a 15-yard pass from Sorensen with 1:27 left in the game.
