The United States beat Germany, 3-1 (15-13, 14-16, 15-4, 15-10), in the first round of the men’s world volleyball championship at Athens, Greece.

Brazil, the world’s top ranked team, defeated Argentina, 3-2 (7-15, 10-15, 15-4, 15-10, 15-10), while defending champion Italy handily beat China, 3-0 (15-8, 15-8, 15-4).

In other games, Group A’s Greece easily defeated Canada, 3-0 (15-7, 15-3, 15-12), while in Group D the Netherlands beat Sweden, 3-1 (15-8, 15-9, 12-15, 15-5).

In other matches, Russia beat Algeria, 3-0 (15-10, 15-6, 15-3), in their Group A match. Group D’s Cuba beat South Korea, 3-2 (12-15, 17-16, 15-9, 9-15, 15-10), while in Group C, Bulgaria defeated Japan, 3-1 (16-14, 15-9, 14-16, 15-11).

Jurisprudence

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson’s attorneys have asked a Marion Superior Court judge to cancel a Nov. 14 hearing scheduled in the appeal of his rape conviction.

The hearing was scheduled to hear Tyson’s petition for post-conviction relief, but his attorney’s filed a motion asking Judge Patricia Gifford to cancel it.

The motion does not say why Tyson wants to drop the issue. Attorney James Voyles, who filed the motion, declined to comment.

Lynne Cox of Los Alamitos said she had received approval from the governments involved to swim the Gulf of Aqaba that joins Israel, Egypt and Jordan Oct. 17-18.

Since 1987 when she became the first person to swim across the Bering Strait from Little Diomede Island in the U.S. to Big Diomede Island in the former Soviet Union, Cox, 37, has picked various waters in Europe, Asia and South America to symbolically link adversarial nations.
