Barry Chapman Bishop, 62, a National Geographic Society official and a member of the first American team to reach the summit of Mt. Everest in 1963. Bishop, former chairman of the society’s committee on exploration and research, had recently retired to Bozeman, Mont., after living in Bethesda, Md., National Geographic officials said. Bishop had been chairman of the research committee since 1989, presiding over the distribution of millions of dollars in grants for research and exploration. He and his son, Brent, were the only American father and son to reach the top of Everest. His son made the ascent in 1994. The elder Bishop was en route to San Francisco to deliver a lecture when he died Saturday in Idaho of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
