IRVINE : Man Running Across Freeway Is Hit, Killed
An Irvine man apparently fleeing police was struck by two cars and killed Wednesday night as he ran across the Santa Ana Freeway, police said.
Michael J. Castenada, 19, ran when police arrived at a gas station on Trabuco Road near the freeway after the attendant reported about 10 p.m. that an apparently drunk man was loitering and bothering customers, Irvine police Lt. Sam Allevato said.
“As soon as he saw the police car, he took off,†Allevato said.
Castenada, who lived in an apartment building near the Shell station, dashed up the Culver Drive on-ramp and across the northbound lanes of the freeway, police said. He was struck by two cars as he crossed the southbound lanes, Allevato said.
The drivers were not injured or cited, California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Angel Johnson said.
