SIMI VALLEY : Motorcycle Deputy Injured in Collision

A sheriff’s deputy en route to work in Simi Valley on Thursday suffered moderate injuries when his motorcycle collided with an approaching car that was making a left turn, authorities said.

Robert McGill, 37, a 14-year veteran of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, suffered a broken ankle and leg lacerations in the 5:44 a.m. accident at Royal Avenue and Sinaloa Road, Simi Valley police said.

Christina Loveall, 24, of Simi Valley was turning from eastbound Royal to northbound Sinaloa on a green light, when her car collided with the motorcycle that was approaching on westbound Royal, Lt. John Ainsworth said.

He said Loveall failed to yield to the motorcycle and did not have proof of insurance, both infractions. She will be cited, Ainsworth said.

He said McGill, who also suffered bruises and neck and back pains, was treated and released from Simi Valley Hospital. So was Loveall, who suffered a bruised knee and a strained arm, Ainsworth said.

McGill, who is married with two children, was on his way to Camarillo, where he has worked as a traffic officer--the city’s first on a motorcycle--for seven years, Sgt. Mike Lewis said.

He was Camarillo officer of the year in 1992 and for 10 years has been the adviser to the Explorer Post program, which provides vocational training for youths interested in law enforcement, Lewis said.
