The Hairdresser’s Husband (Cinemax Thursday at 5:35 a.m.), French director Patrice Leconte’s cracked 1992 fairy tale, offers a middle-age man (Jean Rochefort) fulfilling a fantasy by marrying a shy, lovely hairdresser (Anna Galiena). Their “perfect happiness” contains a stinger.
Pelle the Conqueror (KCET Saturday at 9 p.m.), Billie August’s great 1988 agrarian epic, pits landowners against farm workers in a state of stark and immutable inequity. Also a tender father-and-son story, with a superb Max Von Sydow and newcomer Pelle Hvenegaard.
Babette’s Feast (KCET Saturday at 11:30 p.m.) is an exquisite, subtle Isak Dinesen fable. Stephane Audran stars in the role of her career.
