Favored BCR Town Jewel won the final of the $230,000 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity at Los Alamitos on Saturday night.
Ridden by Henry Garcia, BCR Town Jewel raced 350 yards in 17.62 seconds, winning by nearly a length over runner-up Alibis Assets. Pick Sixer finished third after bumping hard at the start of the race.
BCR Town Jewel, an Idaho-bred gelding owned by Harvey and Brenda Pickens, previously raced at Les Bois Park in Idaho and at Teton, Wyo. While he failed to break his maiden in three tries, the Pickenses thought enough of the horse to send him to trainer Blane Schvaneveldt in California.
“(BCR Town Jewel) has as good a chance as any of them,” Schvaneveldt said before the race. “If he’ll repeat the race he ran in the trials, he’ll be all right.”
Notably absent from the final was one of BCR Town Jewel’s main rivals in the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity, Dicey Secret.
“She didn’t pull up as good as we would have liked,” said Dicey Secret’s trainer, Danny Mitchell. “She’s been running hard all year long, and she’s going to get a little time off.”
Dicey Secret, who finished third in the California Sires Cup Futurity and second in both the Miss Kindergarten and Governor’s Cup Futurities, will take the rest of the year off.
