COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Stanford Beats Titans in Soccer
Stanford scored with about four minutes left and Cal State Fullerton missed a chance to tie in the closing seconds of the Cardinal’s 3-2 victory in a Reebok Classic men’s soccer game Monday at Titan Stadium.
The Titans (1-1) are the seventh-ranked team in the nation. Unranked Stanford is 1-1.
All the scoring came in the final 15 minutes. Stanford took the lead, 3-2, when Carmen D’Onofrio scored on a free kick in the 86th minute. The Titans’ Joey Franchino had a chance to tie it, but his shot hit the side post just before time ran out.
Ryan Collins had two goals for Stanford, the second coming in the 77th minute and putting the Cardinal ahead, 2-1. Fullerton’s Brad Wilson tied it about seven minutes later. Adrian Cortes scored the other Fullerton goal.
UCLA beat Cal State Sacramento, 5-0, also Monday and won the tournament with a 2-0 record.
In the women’s Reebok Classic:
CS Fullerton 2, Pacific 0--Amber Dickey scored a goal in each half as the host Titans recorded their first victory over a Division I opponent in the two-year history of the program.
In nonconference men’s soccer:
Cal Baptist 1, Chapman 0--Pat Smith scored on a penalty kick with less than two minutes remaining for visiting Cal Baptist (1-0). Chapman goalkeeper Craig Bennett set up the penalty kick when he was called for a pushing in the penalty box during a Cal Baptist free kick.
