VAN NUYS : Woman Arraigned in Car Chase Case
A 32-year-old woman who led police on a car chase from Van Nuys to Tarzana was arraigned Tuesday and charged with felony evading arrest and a separate count of driving under the influence, authorities said.
Carliss McWhorter led police on a chase that reached speeds of 70 m.p.h. at times and ended when she crashed into a tree and her car burst into flames early Saturday morning, authorities said.
Los Angeles police officers had to pull the slightly injured woman from the car.
Officers had initially tried to stop McWhorter, they said, when she failed to stop at a stop sign in North Hollywood. Then, aided by the California Highway Patrol, they chased her through Van Nuys, onto the Ventura Freeway and into Tarzana, where she crashed.
Bail for McWhorter was set at $10,000, said a court officer. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9.
