Teen Killed Outside Security Gate of His Apartment Complex
SANTA ANA — An 18-year-old man was shot to death outside his apartment complex early Saturday as he was attempting to open a locked security gate, police said.
Alfonso Alvarez was returning home to his complex at 416 S. Birch St. just before 4 a.m. when he was confronted by unknown assailants, police said. A fight apparently broke out and someone shot Alvarez in the chest with a small caliber handgun, police said.
The teen-ager died at the scene.
Santa Ana police said the department’s gang unit is investigating the killing, although it’s unknown if the shooting was gang-related. No arrests had been made Saturday.
