Brown Quits as Woodbridge Baseball Coach
IRVINE — Vince Brown said he has resigned as Woodbridge baseball coach after failing to secure a full-time teaching job in the Irvine Unified School District.
Brown, 34, quit Tuesday after two seasons at Woodbridge, where he was a walk-on coach. A full-time middle school teacher in the Tustin Unified School District, Brown could not land a position in Irvine. His job in Tustin prevents him from devoting enough time to coaching baseball, he said.
“I made every attempt to get into the Irvine Unified School District,†Brown said. “Though some people like the athletic director (Dave Cowen) acted surprised when I said earlier this summer I needed a full-time job, they knew. It’s come to the point I’ve got to make a commitment to Tustin (school district).
“I’m sad for the kids at Woodbridge. They worked hard over the summer and made a lot of strides . . . I don’t like putting them in this situation.â€
Cowen was vacationing and unavailable for comment.
Woodbridge was 11-16 last season under Brown and in a five-way tie for second place in the Sea View League. However, the Warriors failed to earn a Southern Section playoff berth. Two seasons ago, Brown led Woodbridge to a 20-4 mark and a share of the Sea View title with Irvine High.
Brown, who has a 173-67 mark overall, coached seven seasons at Tustin High, where he guided the Tillers to four consecutive Sea View titles and a Southern Section final.
Brown also is an assistant football coach at Chapman University.
