WASHINGTON — Adm. Stanley R. Arthur, the Navy’s vice chief of naval operations, will retire Feb. 1, the Pentagon said Friday.
The Navy’s No. 2 admiral became the center of controversy earlier this year. His nomination to head the Pacific command was withdrawn by senior Navy officials when some senators criticized his handling of a sexual harassment case.
The four-star admiral has served more than 37 years on active duty, the Pentagon said. No nominee for his position was announced.
