SHERMAN OAKS : Group Formed to Study Redevelopment

A community committee has been formed to evaluate a soon-to-be-released Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency proposal for a redevelopment area in Sherman Oaks.

Members of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Assn. established the committee Aug. 18, one day after residents told CRA officials at an association meeting that they want a formal role in the planning process for a redevelopment area.

The agency wants to use a portion of local property taxes to rebuild sections of the quake-ravaged community.

The CRA Study Committee, as the group is known, wants to have veto power over the CRA in deciding the spending priorities of the redevelopment area, said Richard Close, president of the homeowners association.

“There is no (redevelopment area) in the city in which the public has veto power,†Close said. “In other cities it does exist, but not in L.A. So, this could be the first.â€

The redevelopment project will rebuild quake-damaged structures and could involve construction of new buildings, streets and sidewalks.
