THOUSAND OAKS : Ex-Student’s Injury Claim Rejected
The Conejo Valley Unified School District board has rejected a claim by a former Westlake High School student who was injured during an off-campus brawl in February.
The administrative claim filed by Curtis Simmons, 17, sought compensation for medical and general expenses resulting from the incident.
School board members rejected the claim at their meeting Thursday. President Dolores Didio said it is standard procedure for the board to reject all administrative claims.
The law requires plaintiffs to file claims before a lawsuit can be filed in Ventura County Superior Court.
Simmons’ attorney, Judith Fogel, said she expected the board to reject the claim and added that her client will pursue a lawsuit.
Simmons, who school officials said will not return to Westlake High this year, was beaten with a wooden board Feb. 3 during a fight at North Ranch Park that left two other students hospitalized.
