A man shot by a sheriff’s deputy near a park in Boyle Heights on Friday afternoon died later at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.
The deputy was unhurt in the confrontation about 3:25 p.m. in the 600 block of Echandia Street, said sheriff’s spokesman Ron Spear.
Spear said the deputy had been flagged down by people who told him of a beating in nearby Prospect Park. Before the deputy could get out of his patrol car “the suspect began attacking the deputy. During the struggle, one round discharged from the deputy’s weapon,” hitting the man, Spear said.
The dead man’s name was withheld.
