Mark Henderson swam a 1994 world best of 53.60 seconds in beating Brian Alderman in the men’s 100-meter butterfly final Monday in the U.S. National Swimming Championships at the Natatorium here.

Henderson’s bettered the previous 1994 best of 53.80 set by China’s Chenji Jiang. Alderman finished in 53.88.

Henderson quit swimming after failing to make the 1992 Olympic team, but returned to the sport in the fall of 1992 while attending California and began intense training last spring.
