Countywide : Native American Arts at Fairgrounds
California’s largest powwow and Native American arts and crafts show will take place this weekend at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.
Thousands are expected at the 26th annual powwow sponsored by the Southern California Indian Center Inc.
They will be able to participate in or watch Native American dances, sample dishes such as the Native American taco--fried dough topped with beans, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and onions--and purchase handmade jewelry and pottery.
The powwow will also have an educational component, with information available on Native American culture and employment opportunities for Native Americans.
Southern California is home to about 100,000 Native Americans.
About one-fifth of them live in Orange County.
The Southern California Indian Center, which has an office in Garden Grove, provides job training, educational assistance and social services to the Native American community.
The cost for the weekend event is $5 for general admission and $3 for seniors and children age 12 to 17.
Admission for children age 6 to 11 is $1, and children 5 and younger are free.
The event will run from 2 to 11 p.m. on Friday, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
