WEST LOS ANGELES : Newspaper Launches Free Weekly Edition
The publisher of the Los Angeles Independent newspaper chain has begun a new weekly serving West Los Angeles communities.
The broad-sheet Westsider, published by National Media Inc., debuted July 13 with a circulation of 40,000, distributed free to residences and businesses in Brentwood, Westwood, Cheviot Hills, Rancho Park, Beverlywood and parts of Mar Vista.
Other newspapers in the Independent chain include the West Hollywood Independent, Wilshire Independent, the bilingual Edicion Bilingue and the Los Angeles Independent. The Westsider brings the total weekly circulation of the chain’s papers to 240,000.
The Westsider will focus on community news and features, said Stephen Laxineta, chairman and chief executive officer of National Media Inc.
“The Westside has its own flavor. Basically, its quite separate from the rest of L.A. in terms of residents’ lifestyles. There is more interest in health and fitness, and some of (the residents’) entertainment selections are different,†Laxineta said.
And, he promised, the Westsider will have “no O.J. Simpson news,†leaving such breaking news to other papers.
