SMYRNA, Ga. — After a three-hour rain delay and numerous light outages, the Newport Beach Dukes beat the Atlanta Thunder by default Friday night at the Sporting Club of Windy Hill.
After a third warning was given to the Thunder’s coach, the head umpire awarded the game to the Dukes (6-0). In the evening’s only completed match, Trevor Kronemann and Kelly Jones of the Dukes defeated Bjorn Borg and Kelly Evernden, 6-4.
Earlier Friday, in the completion of a match suspended Thursday by rain, the Dukes edged the New Jersey Stars, 24-23, in overtime, in Florham Park, N.J.
The Dukes handed New Jersey (3-1) its first loss when Kronemann and Larisa Neiland defeated Martina Navratilova and John de Jager, 7-6, in a super tiebreaker. The match had been tied at 23 after regulation when rain forced a stoppage of play.
