NBA DRAFT : Clippers Select Murray : Pro basketball: Cal forward drafted amid rumors of impending Mark Jackson trade.
The Clippers, who may not re-sign star small forward Dominique Wilkins, selected Lamond Murray, a 6-foot-7 small forward from California, with the seventh pick in Wednesday’s NBA draft.
The Clippers selected Greg Minor, a 6-6 guard-forward from Louisville, with the 25th pick, which they received from Atlanta in the Dannny Manning deal, however there are reports that they’ll trade disgruntled guard Mark Jackson and the draft rights to Minor to the Indiana Pacers for guard Pooh Richardson, forward Malik Sealy and the rights to Nebraska forward Eric Piatkowski, the 15th selection.
“I know that there are a lot of rumors, things that we intend to do,†Clipper General Manager Elgin Baylor said. “We’re not finished as far as doing things in the future. There are a lot of things that we’re going to do, but we’re not at liberty to talk about it at this particular time.â€
The deal could not be consumated Wednesday because of NBA salary cap rules. Richardson signed an $18.2 million, seven-year contract extension on draft day last year and under NBA rules a player can not be combined in a trade until one year after a deal because of aggregate salary cap rules.
Indiana Coach Larry Brown, who left Richardson off the Pacers’ playoff roster, likes Jackson, who played for him when he coached the Clippers.
Piatkowski, who averaged 21.5 points for the Cornhuskers last season, impressed NBA scouts at predraft tournaments. He was the MVP of the Phoenix Desert Classic, averaging 22 points.
Murray, who idolizes Wilkins, was happy to join the Clippers even though Wilkins, who becomes a free agent Friday, may not be back.
“I’m really excited to be with the Clippers,†Murray said. “I’m glad to be back in California, close to home. I think I have a lot to offer the Clippers.
“I think I’ll bring an added scoring threat along with Dominique Wilkins. I’ve idolized Dominique Wilkins for a number of years and I’m looking forward to being a teammate of his.â€
Murray, who averaged 24.3 points per game last season to lead the Pacific-10 in scoring, needed only three seasons to break Kevin Johnson’s school scoring record with 1,688 points, a 19.1 average.
Murray, the Clippers’ sixth lottery pick in the last 10 years, might make an immediate impact on the Clippers, whose leading scorers, guard Ron Harper and Wilkins, become free agents.
“I like the fact that he can do several things,†Baylor said. “He can really shoot the basketball, and that’s something we have lacked-- a terrific perimeter shooter from the (small forward) position. He can run the floor very well and finish the play on the fast break and he’s a good postup player.â€
Clipper scout Barry Hecker agreed.
“When I first started scouting I asked ‘What makes a player?’ and they said, ‘The guy who pops out at you,’ †Hecker said. “Lamond Murray was the guy who popped out at me. He’s got all kinds of talent. He could be an All-Star if he works at it.
“I thought he was the most skilled small forward in the draft. I thought he was more skilled than (Minnesota’s) Donyell Marshall (the fourth player drafted).â€
A first cousin of Portland forward Tracy Murray, who renounced his final year of eligibility at UCLA two years ago to enter the NBA draft, Murray gave up his senior season at Cal to enter the NBA draft.
Murray, who benefitted from playing the final two seasons of his college career with All-American point guard Jason Kidd, the second player drafted, thinks he’ll prosper without him.
“People can say what they want, but I don’t think I’ll have problems scoring without him on the floor,†Murray said.
Minor, who averaged 13.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists last season, will probably play small forward, Baylor said.
Clipper Notes
The Clippers waived forward Tom Tolbert, who averaged 3.8 points and 2.2 rebounds in 49 games last season. . . . . The Clippers also signed free agent Tony Massenburg, a 6-9 forward who has spent the last two seasons in Spain.
