Lucky, Sav-on Parent to Build New Stores: American Stores Co. said it plans to spend $700 million this year to build 34 new stores, remodel 210 stores and warehouses and improve information systems and technologies. Three new Lucky stores will be built in California, and 65 stores will be remodeled. A company spokeswoman said it was too early to say how many Southern California locations will be involved. Salt Lake City-based American Stores is the nation’s largest combined food and drug chain, with 1,689 outlets in 27 states.
