Wolf and Parque Will Be Pitching Under the Gun in All-Star Game
NORTHRIDGE — For left-handers Randy Wolf and Jim Parque, the added significance of this year’s Bernie Milligan high school all-star baseball game might be found somewhere behind home plate, carrying a radar gun.
That would be Terry Reynolds, the Dodgers’ scouting director, who is expected to watch El Camino Real’s Wolf and Crescenta Valley’s Parque, the starting pitchers at the 18th annual game that starts today at 3:30 p.m. at Cal State Northridge. Both pitchers were selected by the Dodgers in the draft earlier this month.
“I’m not really (nervous),†Parque said. “I’ll just go out there and do my job. Even if I screw up, he’ll see that I can do something.â€
There will be no shame for Parque (12-3, 0.49 earned-run average this season) or Wolf (12-3, 1.19) if they are less than perfect today. Parque is a member of East team, Wolf the West. They will face lineups drawn from the top seniors from Glendale to the Antelope Valley to Newbury Park.
The East team includes 10 players who batted .400 or better, led by Burbank’s Brian Sindle (.540) and Hoover’s Ron Pirayoff (.500).
Also on the team are Notre Dame’s Justin Bunch (.479), Antelope Valley’s Chris Tapia (.467, 43 runs batted in), Palmdale’s Jerome Payton (.462, 37 stolen bases), Sylmar’s Art Diaz (.447), Highland’s Casey Cheshier (.438), Saugus’ Danny Cato (.436), Poly’s Sam Vizcarra (.425) and Montclair Prep’s Matt Muler (.417).
The West’s top hitters are Chatsworth shortstop Bryan LaCour (.481, 41 RBIs) and Simi Valley third baseman Ryan Hankins (.483, nine home runs).
Calabasas’ Josh Morton (.475), Reseda’s Carlos Nunez (.463, seven home runs), Royal’s Joel Mellinger (.451), and Moorpark’s Jason Adamson (.435) and Rick Collier (.407) also play for the West.
Besides Parque, the East’s pitching staff includes Palmdale’s David Glick (11-3, 1.38), Notre Dame’s Rich Igou (11-2, 1.43) and Sylmar’s Carlos Velazco (11-3, 1.80).
Other West pitchers includes Wolf, Newbury Park’s Ray Clinton (10-3, 1.41), Chatsworth’s Jim DeBiase (10-1, 2.44) and L.A. Baptist’s Matt Hernandez (9-2, 1.47).
The East team will be coached by Notre Dame’s Tom Dill and Poly’s Chuck Schwal, and the West by Chatsworth’s Tom Meusborn and L.A. Baptist’s Mark Bates.
