HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Top-Ranked Simi Valley Bottoms Out as Griffin Loses at Lompoc, 2-0

Simi Valley High, the top-ranked softball team in the state, was upset by Lompoc, 2-0, Tuesday in a Southern Section Division I second-round playoff game at Lompoc.
Pioneer pitcher Sara Griffin, the division’s state player of the year last season, saw her high school career come to an end after she surrendered a two-run home run to Lompoc’s Erin Pacheco in the fourth inning. Griffin (21-2) gave up two hits and struck out eight for Simi Valley (24-3). She was outdueled by Kim Wuest (17-1), who gave up two hits for Lompoc (21-3).
Newbury Park 2, Cerritos 0-- Kristi Fox threw a four-hit shutout for the Panthers (21-7) in a Division I game at Cerritos. Fox (10-3) struck out six and walked one.
Jann Thorpe’s fourth-inning double drove in Brandi Funk, and Thorpe scored on a throwing error.
Crescenta Valley 1, St. Joseph’s 0--Amanda Huddleston’s run-scoring double with two out in the ninth inning won the Division II game for the Falcons (22-4).
Crescenta Valley’s Kim Scott (12-1) pitched a three-hitter.
Canyon 5, Hart 4--The Cowboys (18-5-1) scored two runs in the sixth to win the Division II game at Hart (16-13). Each team committed eight errors.
Canyon pitcher Kristin Mills (18-4-1) scattered eight hits.
Saugus 1, Mayfair 0--The Centurions defeated the Monsoons in the second round of the Division II playoffs. Saugus will play Crescenta Valley on Friday.
Quartz Hill 5, San Dimas 2--Cindy Sims had two hits, including a leadoff home run in the first, and scored two runs for the Rebels in their Division III victory.
Mary Flores (10-5) scattered eight hits, struck out four and walked one for Quartz Hill (18-7). San Dimas dropped to 19-2-1.
Alemany 13, Ridgecrest Burroughs 1--Jamie Moore went four for four, drove in six runs and scored three more the Indians (22-2) in a Division III game.
Moore hit her third home run of the season, a three-run blast in the fourth inning.
Oak Park 11, Moorpark 5--Sophomore Shana Silverman went two for three and scored three runs for the Eagles (17-6) in the Division V game at Moorpark (18-6). Moorpark starting pitcher Mindy Penrod had to leave the game after spraining her ankle sliding into third base in the fourth inning with the Musketeers holding a 5-1 lead.
La Reina 14, Alverno 0--Jennifer Baltruzak tossed her second one-hitter of the playoffs in the Division V game at La Reina (16-9).
Baltruzak (11-6) recorded eight strikeouts, and also added two hits and two RBIs.
Teammate Shane Anderson slugged two home runs, including a grand slam in the first inning, and drove in seven runs.
L.A. Lutheran 19, Cate 11--Susan Riddle had three hits and six RBIs for L.A. Lutheran ( 14-5) in the second round Division V game.
Oakwood 21, West Valley Christian 1--Susie Vatz (16-3) tossed her second no-hitter this season and had 14 strikeouts in a Division VI game at Oakwood (16-13).
BASEBALL
Crescenta Valley 12, Rowland 3--Kirk Hagge hit a grand slam to highlight the Falcons’ 10-run first inning in a Division I playoff game at Rowland (20-7).
Jim Parque (11-2) pitched four scoreless innings, allowed one hit and struck out six for Crescenta Valley (18-5).
Gahr 7, Saugus 3--Saugus closed to within 4-3, but Gahr pulled away by scoring three runs in the sixth inning of the Division II playoff game at Saugus (16-9-1).
Brandon Hernandez (5-4) took the loss for the Centurions despite holding Gahr (18-7-1) to six hits.
Antelope Valley 8, Tustin 5--Chris Tapia had two triples, scored two runs and drove in three for the Antelopes (14-9), who defeated defending section champion Tustin in the Division III playoff game.
Tustin (22-6) tied the score, 5-5, in the fourth, but Antelope Valley countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on Tapia’s two-out, two-run triple.
Coast Union 10, Oak Park 4--Coast Union parlayed five hits, five walks and three Oak Park errors into nine sixth-inning runs to eliminate the Eagles from the Division V playoffs.
Whittier Christian 3, Paraclete 1--Bill Kneifel had two of the Spirits’ three hits and scored their only run in a Division V game.
Saugus 1, Mayfair 0--Jamie Gillies (22-2-1) tossed a four-hitter and Kelli Kranz singled to drive in Jill Passafiume with the only run in a Division II game.
In City Section regular season finales:
Chatsworth 9, El Camino Real 2--Rod Daryabigi had three hits and knocked in two for Chatsworth (25-4, 16-1 in league play) in the West Valley League game. Randy Wolf homered for El Camino Real (19-7, 11-6).
Reseda 6, Taft 3--Bobby Carrera had two hits and two RBIs to lead Reseda in a West Valley League game at Taft.
San Fernando 16, Cleveland 0--Jaime Zamora had three hits and three RBIs for the Tigers in the North Valley League game.
Kennedy 9, Granada Hills 3--Kevin Serr had three hits for the Golden Cougars (15-7, 11-6) in a North Valley game.
